Advanced Training in Integrated Sustainable Waste Management
for Siberian Companies and Authorities

First workshop

First workshop "State and problems of industrial waste management in the main industries in Siberian regions and PrimorskyKrai" was held at theTransbaikal State University (TSU), Chita on 29.09.-01.10.2014.

Goals of the seminar:To define the priorities of five industrial sectors for the advanced training courses being developed, as well as the priorities of future services of the international center “Baikal Waste Management”.

In scope of the workshop the presentation were given by the representatives of the following sectors and industries: mining and processing sectors, chemical, petrochemical and metallurgical industries, timber and wood processing industrial sectors, housing and municipal services sector. The main issues of the workshop focused on environmental problems and their potential solutions in the before mentioned sectors. The representatives introduced the workshop participants to the main types of industrial products, to the types of hazardous industrial waste that require improvement of technological processes of waste treatment and recycling, as well as to the methods of environmental impact assessment.

Representatives of five industrial sectors of Transbaikal and Irkutsk Oblast discussed the problem of promoting know-hows and innovative technologies as well as eco-management tools in enterprises.

Nina Nemchinova –Prof., Dr.-Ing. habil., Head of Chair of Metallurgy, National Research Irkutsk State Technical University (ISTU)

The outcome of the workshop is a priority list created by partner universities, that was updated according to the feedback and recommendations provided by the Ministry of natural resources and industrial policy of ZabaykalskyKrai, as well as by the representatives of five industry sectors.

Participants of the workshop discussed future services that would form part of the expansion of environmental activities of Centre «Baikal Waste Management».

Olga Ulanova, the Russian project coordinator, presented the new web site of “TIWaSiC” project. Felicitas Schneider discussed the main details of the upcoming second workshop taking place at University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna, Austria. Christoph Wünsch, head of the project, and workshop participants finalized the schedule of summer internships, that allow academic teaching staff from Russian partner universities to visit European universities.

Apart from that, workshop participants visited the open-pit coal mine “Vostochny”. The main goal of the excursion was to get to know the functionality of the mine and visual assessment of environmental impact of coal mining company.
